Students have long been masters of budget management, turning a modest £30 into a week’s worth of groceries. As inflation soars and prices surge, the wider population could learn a thing or two from thrifty young adults in higher education. The only thing better than cheap right now is free. In this blog we have taken the time to find you three completely free local attractions just minutes away from your Sheffield Hallam Student House, where the only currency you’ll need to spend is your time.
The Millennium Gallery: A Cultural Gem
The Millennium Gallery stands as one of northern England’s most impressive art spaces. Opened in 2001 and situated opposite the Central Library, Graves Gallery, and Hallam University, it’s listed among England’s 15 most visited free attractions by Visit England.
Currently featuring the temporary exhibition “Where We Live” (January to June 2022), the gallery’s crown jewel is its permanent Ruskin
Collection. This diverse assemblage includes watercolours, drawings, prints, illustrated books, manuscripts, and coins from various eras.
The Millennium Gallery is part of Sheffield Museums, alongside Weston Park and Graves Gallery, offering art enthusiasts a variety of experiences. Stay updated with their latest events through Sheffield Museum’s YouTube channel and blog.

Botanical Gardens: A Natural Oasis
As warmer weather approaches, the Botanical Gardens offer a perfect retreat for a day of relaxation. This Grade-II listed site spans 19 acres and showcases over 5,000 plant species, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful picnic, especially during the vibrant spring and summer months.
While entry is free, The Curator’s House, an independent café bistro within the gardens, offers paid refreshments for those looking to indulge.
Open daily: 8 am – 4 pm (10 am – 4 pm on weekends)
Address: Clarkehouse Rd, Broomhall, Sheffield S10 2LN

Millhouses Park: Adventure and Recreation
Located in south Sheffield, Millhouses Park is the perfect destination for those seeking an active day out. While it may not match the Botanical Gardens in scenery, it offers a wider range of activities.
The park features a boating lake as its centerpiece, complemented by a skate park, tennis courts, bowling green, putting green, and basketball court. The Millhouses Park Café, overlooking the boating lake, offers refreshments sourced mainly from local suppliers.
True to our theme, there’s no admission charge, and the park is open all day.
